Atorvastatin is in a class of medications called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). Atorvastatin is used along with a change in diet to lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It works in the liver by reducing the amount of cholesterol that is produced. Atorvastatin can decrease the risk of heart disease and help prevent strokes and heart attacks.
This medication may rarely cause muscle problems (which can rarely lead to very serious conditions called rhabdomyolysis and myopathy). Tell your doctor right away if you develop any muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or a change in your urine.
This medication may rarely cause liver problems. If you notice any yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, tell your doctor right away.
Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
Using gemfibrozil together with atorvastatin can increase the risk of liver damage and a rare but serious condition called rhabdomyolysis that involves the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue.
If it is necessary to take both medications your doctor may require close supervision while on both drugs.
